The Fever, by Megan Abbott

The Fever

A teen girl suffers a seizure at school. Then another one does. Then another.

The Nash family is close. Tom is a popular teacher, a father to two teens: Eli, a hockey star and girl magnet, and his sister Deenie, a diligent student. Their seeming stability is thrown into chaos when Deenie's best friend is struck by a terrifying, unexplained seizure in class. Rumors of a hazardous outbreak spread through the family, school and community.

As hysteria builds, a series of tightly held secrets emerge, threatening to unravel friendships, families and the town's fragile idea of security.

The Fever:

"Masterful...a unique talent with a signature style that gets stronger with every book. With its confident plotting and lyrical prose, The Fever may be her best novel yet."
--Los Angeles Times

"An unforgettable inquiry into the emotional lives of young people... It's also a powerful portrait of community, with interesting echoes of The Crucible...Abbott may be on her way to becoming a major writer."
--Booklist, Starred Review

"A potboiler in the truest, best sense of that devalued word: Its ingredients are expertly combined, patiently agitated, and heated to an inexorable boil. But it's also a great novel, full stop, without any of the usual genre caveats."
--Adam Sternbergh, Slate

"Thrilling...a gripping story fueled by razor-sharp treachery, jealousy, hormones, and the insecurities of teenage girls."
--Publishers Weekly

"The book to beat… in the "Is it the next 'Gone Girl'?" sweepstakes"
–Janet Maslin, New York Times

"The lives of teenage girls are dangerous, beautiful things in Abbott's stunning novel... Abbott expertly ratchet[s] up the suspense...nothing should be taken at fact value."
Kirkus, Starred Review

"a chilling tale about a suburban high school whose female students mysteriously begin suffering sudden, unexplained seizures."

What They're Saying

"The Fever holds true to its title: It's dark, disturbing, strangely beautiful and utterly unshakeable.  Megan Abbott has created a mesmerizing, modern portrait of teenage life today: Brutal crushes, competing allegiances and first-bloom sensuality, all magnified by the rush and crush of technology."

Gillian Flynn

"A psychologically astute thriller...Abbott's latest is not only a page-turning mystery -- it's also a close look at teen girls' ferocious rivalries and intense bonds."

Entertainment Weekly

"Megan Abbott's chilling new novel...turns the frothy world of high-school cheerleading into something truly menacing."

Wall Street Journal

"Abbott has become expert at revealing truths we thought we knew but didn't, delivered in prose that is by turns elegant and incantatory."

Daniel Woodrell

"One of the most exciting and original voices of her generation."

Laura Lippman

"Deft, intelligent and enthralling."

Kate Atkinson

"Megan Abbott writes with total authority and an almost desperate intensity; [she] grabs hold of you and won't let go."

Tom Perrotta

"Megan Abbott captures the essence of being thirteen - all its magic, its intensity, its headlong power and its terrible vulnerability - and wraps it in a story that's taut, unflinching and very hard to put down."

Tana French
